Small Church Initiative (SCI) Many congregations are struggling with their plans for the future. Yet, the primary way for people of faith to reach out to others is through the local church. The Small Church Initiative was created to help leaders discover their unique opportunities for sharing the love of Christ in their communities. A supplementary process of the Healthy Church Initiative developed by the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church, SCI is designed especially for smaller congregations. There are three key steps towards revitalization in a local church: Training of pastors and laity to be intentional about their focus of ministry. Consultation to help churches implement the changes that will benefit their future ministry. Coaching to provide the personal support necessary to maintain a vibrant and healthy church in the midst of change. Through the leadership of Scott Hibben, Leadership Development Minister for Evangelism and New Ministry, Iowa Conference apportionments provide funding for training and resource materials to make SCI available to congregations who desire it.
