“Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them...”
“Who can you Believe?”
Stories about the young church, those who followed Jesus, were everywhere. As the church grew and spread across the Roman Empire the stories became more sinister.
Some told of meetings where these followers of Jesus practiced cannibalism. They eat flesh and drink blood. Well the language lends itself to such rumor mongers. “Whoever eats me lives forever... Jn 6:57.
Have you noticed that persons who love a good rumor about people they hate will not seek to determine the truth before they spread the story. I know some persons who were absolutely convinced that we never landed a man on the moon. It was all a Nixon hoax that took place in the desert. They were victims of those who could see nothing good in President Nixon.
The truth often ruins a good story. Finally after months of abusive rumor making about the President’s birth place it has been laid to rest that he is indeed a citizen, but many will go to the grave believing the tale and continue to spread it.
In the case of the first Christians such rumors fed the fires and it was easy for Nero simply to blame them for the fire that he set to destroy Rome and thus began the age of persecution.
In the check out line at Hy Vee I listened to two people talking about how the government will soon have the power to determine who will live and who will die if the current health care plan passes. Anyone who has made a living will knows that such discussions about your desires for the end of your life are common and necessary. I am so indebted to a wise and careful counselor who assisted Lillian and me in deciding just what we desired regarding medical issues and end of life. I assume that such opportunities on a volunteer basis was being made available in the proposed plan.
This is a good time for the preacher simply to say to the congregation “enough already”. The Christian community does not participate in gossip or such garbage as we are hearing day after day.
In the early persecuted church the writers simple said that” the days are evil.” I think they meant that no one cared enough to seek the truth. Well we are called to ask questions, challenge, and push until we know before we spread rumors. The anger that led to the death of Jesus was fired by such rumor and half truth.
Born on this day: Peter Lombard (c.1100-c.1160) Great teacher in the Roman Catholic church --He was charged with teaching false doctrine but survived. He was instrumental in determining that the church should have seven sacraments, and this became normative for Roman Catholics.

Las historias sobre la iglesia primitiva, los que seguían a Jesús, estaban en todas partes. Mientras la iglesia crecía y se extendía tras el Imperio Romano las historias se ponían más siniestras.

¿Has notado que personas a quienes les encanta un buen rumor acerca de personas que odian no intentarán a determinar la verdad antes de que extienden una historia. Conozco a unas personas que estaban absolutamente convencidas que jamás pusimos a un hombre en la luna. Todo fue un engaño de Nixon que tomó lugar en el desierto. Eran víctimas de los que no podían ver nada bueno en el Presidente Nixon.
La verdad frecuentemente arruina una buena historia. Finalmente, después de meses de hacer rumores sobre el lugar de nacimiento del Presidente, ha sido puesto al descanso que de verdad es ciudadano, pero muchos irán a la tumba creyendo la historia y seguirán a extenderla.
En el caso de los primeros cristianos tales rumores daban leña al fuego y fue fácil que Nero simplemente les echaban la culpa por el fuego que él encendió para destruir a Roma y así comenzó la edad de persecución.
En la línea para pagar por las cosas en Hy-Vee escuché a dos personas hablando de cómo el gobierno pronto tendrá el poder de determinar quién vivirá y quién morirá si pasan el último plan del cuidado de salud. Cualquier persona que ha ganado un sueldo sabrá que tales discusiones acerca de los deseos para el fin de la vida son comunes y necesarias. Estoy tan endeudado a un aconsejador sabio y prudente que ayudaba a Lillian y a mí en decidir exactamente lo que queríamos respecto a cuestiones medicales y el fin de la vida. Supongo que tales oportunidades en base de voluntaria eran dispuestas en el plan propuesto.
Ésta es buena hora para que el predicador le diga simplemente a la congregación “basta ya.” La comunidad cristiana no participa en chismes o tal basura como oímos día tras día.
En la iglesia primitiva y perseguida los escritores simplemente dijeron que “los días son malos.” Creo que significaban que a nadie le importaba bastante buscar la verdad. Pues es nuestro llamamiento hacer preguntas, desafiar, y empujar hasta que sepamos antes de que extendamos rumores. La ira que condujo a la muerte de Jesús fue despedido por tal rumor y tal media verdad.
