Happy 30th Birthday, Thanksgiving Ingathering! November 7, 2009

This year marks the 30th Birthday of the Thanksgiving Ingathering, a way for Iowa United Methodists to address hunger problems locally and around the world.

Can your church make 30 kits each for this year’s event to celebrate 30 years? If each church does this, what a party it would be! Did you know that there is a new kit that was added this year? Be sure to check out the new Birthing Kit for our Iowa Nigeria Partnership. 30 kits would be a great start!

Join in the fun and fellowship on November 7th at one of the following sites – there will be food, worship services, youth events, crafts, baked goods, woodcrafts and handmade quilts sold at auction.

We look forward to seeing you in Cherokee, Cedar Falls, Webster City, Greenfield and Mt. Pleasant! Click here for additional information.

Bringing Global Music into Worship
Thursdays, October 22, 29; November 5, 12, 19, 7:00-9:00 pm
Messiah United Methodist Church in Plymouth, Minn.

Global music has exploded into our lives and the music scene over the last couple of decades. A wealth of beautiful, colorful world music--ancient, new, and adapted--is available for worship services and of great interest to churches looking for ways to break down walls and open doors to a wider community. This very practical workshop is for those eager to bring global music into worship by examining questions of culture and performance, surveying available materials, and exploring how to use them in your church. This class is not only for musicians, but for anyone interested in the topic.

Arthur Clyde, has spent a lifetime in music and arts ministries and is well versed in the use of music in worship. In addition to his experience in congregations, he has created numerous resources and workshops as minister for worship, music, and liturgical arts for the United Church of Christ (UCC) and is editor of The New Century Hymnal, one of the most culturally diverse hymnals ever created.

Fee: $175.00

Creating Significant Worship Through Design and Collaborative Planning

Saturday, November 14, 9:00 AM-3:00 PM

Steckel Learning Center at United Theological Seminary

Worship teams, pastors, musicians, and laypersons eager to bring new interest and vitality to worship in the church will find immediate use for this all-day workshop in worship design and collaborative planning. This fresh look at how worship can flow and engage through senses and imagery is applicable to all styles of worship and liturgical models, whether your worship is thematic or lectionary-based. A presentation rich with examples and worship experiences will provide inspiration and creative ideas. The concluding session provides an opportunity for congregations to work in teams on worship planning for the seasons of Lent and Easter 2010. Ideally, congregations are encouraged to attend in teams of four to five people—such as a team of clergy, lay, music, and youth—although individuals are welcome.

Arthur Clyde, United adjunct faculty, is a life-long church musician, composer, and conductor. In 1991, he joined the UCC national staff as editor of The New Century Hymnal and remained on staff until 2006 as minister for worship, music, and liturgical arts, creating resources, holding workshops, and designing worship for national UCC and ecumenical gatherings.

Group Fee: $190.00 for teams of 3-5 (lunch included)
Individual Fee: $65.00 (lunch included)
