Greetings from the Dir. of Recovery,
Wednesday night I had the opportunity to speak to the Cedar Rapids City Council. Block by Block is asking for funding from the local option sales tax and Clint Twedt-Ball asked me to tell them about our role in this program - the VOLUNTEERS! I told them about the fact that we have brought in 8,411 volunteers, which means 138,911 total volunteer hours. And there was an audible gasp of amazement from the council. When I was finished the Mayor thanked me for my comments and for the help that we have brought to Cedar Rapids. So from the Mayor, thank you to everyone who has come to Cedar Rapids to help! The Flood Recovery Office of the UMC and Block by Block were awarded AmeriCorps NCCC teams for this winter and spring. This will continue to keep a constant work force in the rebuild effort during the holiday season.
If you had a volunteer in every house, how many houses would that be? 46
Where do you need specialized volunteers? Site managers (individuals to look after one house as it's being rebuilt) and truck drivers to move materials in the am.
When will the UM effort each 150,000 hours? Hopefully by the end of October.
Do you really need local volunteers? YES!!!
Who is Shelby? Shelby Colwell was one of the summer interns for the Flood Recovery Office. We applied to have her stay on as an AmeriCorps Vista for the next year. She has officially started now as an AmeriCorps Vista. Her main role is supporting the volunteer teams and PR.
