Memo for Sunday Nov. 22
Christ the King
John 18:33-37 "Pilate asked him: “are you the king of the Jews...?”
Ready or not the calendar wishes for us to know that the days run down to a precious few. The last Sunday of the church year names Christ the King. It was a brave thing to name Christ King.
This Jesus from the hill country of Galilee named King flew in the face of those who knew there was only one God--Caesar.
Before Jesus was born another human was named Son of God. Caesar Augustus the first undisputed ruler of the Roman Empire named the divine Son of God. Words like lord, redeemer, savior of the world were reserved for this “very god”. Words like grace, salvation epiphany and Prince of Peace were used to describe him.
When Nero became ruler he will also declare divinity and is known as the Prince of Peace. These old boys were jealous of their titles and as Paul began to preach the titles were transferred to Jesus. That did not set well with Nero.
I find it remarkable that in each of the authentic letters of Paul he begins with Grace to you and Peace from our Lord Jesus Christ, (meaning not from Nero). So on Christ the King Sunday we are bold to announce to the Empire that Jesus Christ is King, and Prince of Peace. Go tell that to Wall Street where money is King. Go say that to the Pentagon where war is worshipped. Go tell it to the Senate and the House where leaders have lost their nerve...Let the young president know--that the nation must not turn away from the search for peace on Earth good will to all. As you sit down to your thanksgiving turkey later this week, just know that Christ is in all things above all things--indeed this one is our Peace. --Something to give thanks for indeed! Happy Thanksgiving, and Preach well.

Memorándum para domingo el 22 de noviembre
Cristo el Rey
Juan 18:33-37 “Pilato le preguntó: “¿eres tú el rey de los judíos . . .?”
Listos o no el calendario desea que sepamos que los días ya son pocos. El último domingo del año de la iglesia nombra a Cristo como Rey. Fue una cosa valiente para hacer el nombrar a Cristo como Rey.
Este Jesús de la región de colinas en Galilea nombrado Rey fue directamente contra los que sabían que sólo había un Dios – César.
Ante de que Jesús naciera, otro humano fue nombrado el Hijo de Dios. César Augusto el primer soberano indiscutido del Imperio Romano fue nombrado el divino Hijo de Dios. Palabras como señor, redentor, salvador del mundo fueron reservadas para este “verdadero Dios.” Palabras como gracia, salvación, epifanía, y Príncipe de Paz fueron usadas para describirlo.
Cuando Nero se hizo soberano también declarará divinidad y se conocerá como el Príncipe de Paz. Estos viejos eran celosos de sus títulos and como Pablo comienza a predicar se trasladaron los títulos a Jesús. Eso no cayó bien a Nero.
Lo encuentro notable que en cada de las cartas auténticas de Pablo, comienza con Gracia a Uds. Y Paz de nuestro Señor Jesucristo (significando no de Nero). Así que en el domingo de Cristo el Rey somos audaces en anunciar al Imperio que Jesucristo es Rey, y Príncipe de Paz. Vaya a decir eso a “Wall Street’ donde el dinero es rey. Que sepa el joven Presidente – que la nación no debe apartarse de la búsqueda para paz en la tierra y buena voluntad para todos.
