Greetings from the Dir. of Recovery,
It's 60-70 degrees in Cedar Rapids this week - come and volunteer! Okay, so maybe that's the inside temperature, but this is an opportune time to be inside working and volunteering! So why not call our flood recovery office at 877-393-1607 or go to www.stormrecovery.org and register to volunteer. Bring yourself or gather a team.
Here's why we need your help:
- Just got off the phone with Tanya Lantz, the volunteer coordinator from Oakville. They will need volunteers to start registering for March and continuing through the fall. They are still working hard to get homeowners back to Oakville. Tanya can be reached at 319-759-7685. Remember housing is available at the Oakville UMC and lunch provided at the community center in Oakville.
- Block by Block now owns 10 homes that need to be rehabbed so we can sell them to families in need of affordable housing.
- Block by Block is currently working on several homes that are occupied by the homeowner.
- You need to come to Cedar Rapids and see the progress being made.
- Because recovery will take years!
From Pastor Melisa, Conference Volunteer Coordinator -
Total flood effort June 10, 2008 to December 23, 2009:
Flood Recovery Office of the UMC -
- 39 complete rebuilds
- 85 intense homeowner assists
- 267 gutted structures
Block by Block -
- 35 homeowner assists
- 8 complete rebuild
- 13 in progress rebuilds
This means 447 families were touched by volunteers in the name of Jesus Christ in Cedar Rapids alone.
That's all for this time, watch for the next email; I'll have pictures of the house that was moved by BBB!
Happy New Year!
