MEMO For The Third Sunday in Lent
“Seek the Lord..God will abundantly pardon...”
Isaiah 55:1-9 points to the heart of Israel’s faith, and expresses perfectly the hope for us who follow the Christ. This text, born in the exile, defines God’s amazing Grace. The God who provides food in the wilderness, bread for the journey, is the same God who offers abundant pardon. Isaiah is defining the Grace of God, a gift that money cannot buy--it is freely given. Free grace! This Grace is like the air we breath. Just as everyone has access to air so it is with God’s Grace-- the gift of life.
Too bad that the church sometimes gets into silly arguments as to who is worthy to receive God’s Grace. How can you ration abundance? Some still believe that we have to earn it, measure up, jump through the hoops to receive it. The true church can no more deny Grace than it can deny the air we breathe.
I really hate the fact that we still have to say to people before Communion that this is an open table. Who shut the door in the first place? It would be helpful if we could move the church out of the sixteenth century--perhaps go back to the future--to the age of Isaiah. Too bad that the editors stopped the reading for Sunday at verse 9. Maybe we should pick up the text at verse 12 which reads:
“for you shall go out in joy, and be led in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the briar shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that we shall not be cut off.
Two guys caught preaching without Words: Roy Reece, Grace Church in Des Moines pushed pulled and challenged the church to be generous with the Haitian offering--raised $8,000. And that was just the beginning. Another push provided 365 health kits with cash included for shipping and tooth paste etc. You can’t say no to Roy.
Dr. Larry Severidt, recent new member who cast the vision for a free Health Clinic and it will happen this Month. Each Tuesday evening those in the neighborhood who are denied access to health care can come to Grace and see a doctor for free.

Memorándum para el tercer domingo en la Cuaresma
¡Buscad a Jehová! . . . Dios . . . será amplio en perdonar . . .”
Isaías 55:1-9 señala el corazón de la fe de Israel, y expresa perfectamente la esperanza para nosotros que seguimos a Cristo. Este texto, nacido en el exilio, define la gracia asombrosa de dios. El Dios que provee comida en el desierto, pan para el viaje, es el mismo Dios que ofrece el perdón abundante. Isaías define la Gracia de Dios, un don que el dinero no puede comprar – es dado libremente. ¡Gracia gratis! Esta Gracia es como el aire que respiramos. Exactamente como todo el mundo tiene acceso al aire, así es con la Gracia de Dios – el don de la vida.
Es lástima que algunas veces la iglesia tiene peleas tontas sobre quien es digno de recibir la Gracia de Dios. ¿Cómo se puede racionar la abundancia? Algunos todavía creen que tenemos que ganarla, estar a la altura requerida, pasar por los requisitos, para recibirla. La iglesia verdadera no puede negar la Gracia en la misma manera que no podemos negar el aire que respiramos.
O dio el hecho de que todavía tenemos que decirles a personas antes de la Comunión que ésta es una mesa abierta. ¿Quién cerró la puerta en el primer lugar? Sería beneficioso si pudiéramos mover a la iglesia más allá del siglo XVI – quizás debemos regresar al futuro – a la edad de Isaías. Es lástima que los editores pararon la lectura para domingo en el versículo 9. Tal vez debemos continuar en el versículo 12 que lee:
Porque con alegría saldréis y con paz regresaréis. Los montes y los collados levantarán canción delante de vosotros, y todos los árboles del campo darán palmadas de aplauso. En lugar de la zarza crecerá ciprés,
y en lugar de la ortiga crecerá arrayán;
y será a Jehová por nombre,
por señal eterna que nunca será borrada.
