Special Work Camp Opportunity at Day Spring UMC, Native American Fellowship, East Peoria, Il (June 20-25)

Day Spring UMC, Native American Fellowship, will host a week-long workcamp June 20 - June 25 to move this church project along! Workcamp particpants will work Monday through Thursday noon on various construction related projects. Thursday afternoon there will be an outing to Mounds State Museum (a very large archaeological museum) and have a cultural evening presented by the Day Spring congregation. If working for the week, plan to arrive Sunday evening, June 20.

Early Bird cost is $35 per day (early bird rate) or $165 for the week. Those registering after June 14 will pay $40 per day or $200 for the week. This covers food, a small project fund, and a place to lay your head (cots or camping options). You will be informed what to bring for tools and bedding, etc, once you register. Youth and adults are welcome. Bring a team from your church!

Friday will be a series of workshops offering information to help UMVIM teams go beyond the construction aspect of UMVIM teams :

Workshops include:

  • an introduction class on healthy communities (Jane Dunn),
  • VBS in a cross cultural setting (Singing Bird Ballard),
  • Native American issues, Danny Libarger, Pastor at Day Spring UMC
  • Liberia Covenant, Illinois Great Rivers (Bunny Wolfe),
  • an update on Haiti UMVIM response (Lorna Jost),
  • an update on Chile UMVIM response (Mario Mayer),
  • and an afternoon session on practical applications and implementation of some healthly community techniques and practices wherever you go (Jane Dunn)!

Oil spill touches Louisiana churches

The Rev. Kirby Verret is working all sides of the Gulf Coast oil spill disaster that threatens both his small Louisiana church and his community. He is trying to tend to his 178-member Native American United Methodist congregation at Clanton Chapel in Dulac, offering support to families and people who fish for a living. And he is negotiating with British Petroleum, which wants access to the large, centralized sewer system – built after Hurricane Juan in 1985 – on the church’s property and space to house cleanup teams on church grounds. Church leader, 80, murdered in sanctuary

Few places were as meaningful to Lillian Wilson as Central United Methodist Church just outside Wynne. She was baptized and married there. She started teaching Sunday school recently to help out while the church’s longtime teacher recovered from a stroke. And on Sunday morning, June 6, the 80-year-old retired nurse was in the church to finish assembling disaster relief buckets and health kits for collection at the denomination’s Arkansas Annual (regional) Conference meeting, which started Sunday night. It was her last act of servanthood. She was found beaten to death in the church sanctuary that afternoon. Read more
