MEMO for the 5th Sunday after Pentecost
“The passing of the mantle”
2 Kings 2;1-2,6-14
We are hard pressed to use this text without hearing in the back ground the theme song from the movie “Chariot of fire” . Elijah is going away and the young man Elisha begs for a double portion of his spirit. The wish is to be granted if the young man sees Elijah’s departure. So old Elijah flies away in a chariot of fire and Elisha takes the prophet’s mantle parts the waters and begins his ministry. All the text needs is Vangelis’ great music.
On this Sunday many pastors will be giving farewell sermons and making ready to pass the mantle to the one who will follow. It’s a hard thing for most of us to leave a parish especially when there has been a good ministry. Babies were baptized, weddings were performed, life long friendships established, secrets shared, joys and sorrows known. Always there are things left undone, plans unfinished, and all of that stuff that we simply never got around to. The moving van comes, we load our books, say good by and close another chapter in our life’s work. We are traveling preachers. In our best moments we know that the new person will continue our work and we can only hope for her success.
A sad aspect of our work is that we make more friends that we can possibly keep. That is simply the rule of life. But, in years to come, some young adult will stop you in the mall or on some street corner and say, “Hi, do you remember me? I was that loud mouthed kid who interrupted your children’s sermons and I still remember some of them. You were the best preacher we ever had”. So it goes. Best wishes to all of you who are passing the mantle on to another this year. Preach well in the new place and be generous in your praise of the one who follows you.

Memorándum para el quinto domingo después de Pentecostés
“El pasar del manto”
2 Reyes 2:1-2, 6-14
Nos es difícil usa este texto sin oír en el fondo el tema musical de la película “Chariots of Fire” [Carros de Fuego]. Elías se va y el joven Eliseo pide una porción doble de su espíritu. El deseo será concedido si el joven ve la partida de Elías. Así que el anciano Elías vuela en un carro de fuego y Elías toma el manto del profeta, aparta las aguas y comienza su ministerio. Lo único que necesita el texto es la gran música de Vangelis.
Este domingo muchos pastores darán sus sermones de despedida y preparándose para pasar el manto al/a la que lo/la seguirá. Es cosa difícil para la mayoría de nosotros partir de una parroquia especialmente cuando ha habido un buen ministerio. Bebes fueron bautizados, bodas fueron celebradas, amistades fueron establecidas que durarán durante toda la vida, secretos fueron compartidos, alegrías y penas fueron conocidas. Siempre hay cosas dejadas sin hacer, planes sin terminar, y todas esas cosas que jamás tuvimos tiempo para hacer. El camión de mudanzas viene, cargamos nuestros libros, nos despedimos y cerramos otro capítulo en el trabajo de nuestra vida. Somos predicadores itinerantes. En nuestros mejores momentos sabemos que la persona nueva continuará nuestro trabajo y solamente podemos esperar que tenga éxito.
Un aspecto triste de nuestro trabajo es que hacemos más amigos que es posible mantener. Esto es simplemente la regla de la vida. Pero, en los venideros, algún adulto joven te detendrá en el centro comercial o en alguna esquina en la calle y dirá, “Hola, me recuerdas? Yo era ese niño barbullón que interrumpía tus sermones para los niños y todavía recuerdo algunos de ellos. Eras el mejor predicador que jamás tuvimos.” Así va. Mejores deseos a todos de Uds. que están pasándole el manto a otro/a este año. Predica bien en el nuevo lugar y sea generoso/a en su elogio del/de la que te sigue.
