VIM Group Off to Haiti

Twelve Iowans will leave for Haiti as part of the first Iowa United Methodist Volunteers in Mission trip on August 14 returning August 22. This time period is during the hurricane season with hot temperatures during the dry season.

Working with UMCOR personnel in Haiti, the group is assigned to Thomas Methodist Church and school where 11 persons died, 23 persons displaced and the building crumbled but has been deemed structurally sound. Our job will be to remove debris and concrete in preparation for other teams to come in and start rebuilding the church (upper floor) and school (lower floor).

The twelve Iowans come from Burlington, Libertyville, Bloomfield, Belle Plaine, Riceville, Ankeny, Des Moines, Osceola, Maxwell and Davenport. Team leaders are Beverly Nolte and Hugh Stone. Housing will be in a tent placed at the work site with cots for beds. The group will have a translator and cook.

Plans are to hold a Vacation Bible School for church and community children each day with the theme of Noah’s Ark.

The group raised $3,500 for the project which was matched with UMCOR funds for a total of $7,000 for the Thomas project. The team requests prayers on their behalf and for the Haitians with whom they will work.
