Nominations for 2020 General/Jurisdictional Conference

The General Conference of the United Methodist Church meets every four years to make important decisions about the mission emphasis, denominational structure and other topics that impact the global church. The 2020 General Conference will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 5-15, 2020. All who are interested in being a delegate to General Conference must complete a nomination form.

Nomination Form

  1. Review the qualifications: See Eligibility Rules 
  2. Due by April 15, 2019. Submit the nomination form using the green Nomination Form button above. It will automatically be submitted electronically to the Conference Secretary at the Conference Center. Additional nominations may be submitted on the floor of the annual conference to the Conference Secretary on the first day of annual conference.
  3. The 2019 Iowa Annual Conference will elect six lay and six clergy delegates to General Conference and an additional six lay and six clergy delegates to Jurisdictional Conference. Alternate delegates will also be elected.

Important dates and considerations:

  • Delegates must attend delegation meetings leading up to General Conference
  • Submit nomination form by April 15, 2019 to be included in the materials for nominees prior to the 2019 Annual Conference
  • Commitment to attend 2020 General Conference May 5-15, 2020 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • Commitment to attend 2020 Jurisdictional Conference, July 15-18, 2020 at the Fort Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
  • Delegates to General and Jurisdictional Conferences are members and expected to attend Annual Conference for the following quadrennium 2020-2023.

Clergy Nominees Qualifications

¶ 35. Article IV.  The clergy delegates to the General Conference and to the jurisdictional or central conference shall be elected from the clergy members in full connection and shall be elected by the clergy members of the annual conference or provisional annual conference who are deacons and elders in full connection, associate members, and those provisional members who have completed all of their educational requirements and local pastors who have completed course of study or an M. Div. degree and have served a minimum of two consecutive years under appointment immediately preceding the election.

Lay Nominees Qualifications

¶ 36. Article V. The lay delegates to the General and jurisdictional or central conferences shall be elected by the lay members of the annual conference or provisional annual conference without regard to age, provided such delegatesshall have been professing members of The United Methodist Church for at least two years next preceding their election, and shall have been active participants in The United Methodist Church for at least four years next preceding their election, and are members thereof within the annual conference electing them at the time of holding the General and jurisdictional or central conferences.
