The Diversity Service Center of Iowa (DSCI) provides educational outreach services to guide individuals, organizations and employers through the immigration process. DSCI also works to establish a community of support and a sense of security by advocating for minority and under-served senior citizens. RESPONSIBILITIES The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of DSCI, with primary responsibility for managing day-to-day operations and directing the work of a professional staff, leading the organization’s fund development efforts, and serving as the primary spokesperson for DSCI within the local community and local government. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures the organization is fiscally sound and that its internal and external communications, fund development and programming meet its mission and goals. The Executive Director works directly with staff team, board members, volunteers, churches, other service organizations, immigrant groups, foundations and private sector funders to accomplish the organization’s mission. JOB DUTIES Leadership and Management • Oversees administration of the operations of the organization; provides overall leadership and management of its day-to-day affairs. • Ensures that the organization and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive manner. • Establishes a clear vision for the continued growth and expansion of DSCI. Provides direction to guide programs that align with the organization’s vision. • Provides support and oversight to program volunteers. • Organizes and attends all board meetings and performs other duties as assigned by the board of directors. • Works with the board of directors to identify and help recruit new board members who will add diversity to the board and whose talents, interests and commitment will help to further DSCIs mission. Resource Development and Financial Management • Acts as the chief fundraising agent for the organization, including proposal and grant writing. • Maintains a consistent stream of revenues adequate to fund the organization’s activities and programs. • Oversees the internal financial management systems. • Ensures compliance with all relevant federal, state and local regulations regarding revenue accounting, generations and reports. • Works with board members and volunteers in fundraising efforts. Program Development • Provides leadership in advancing the mission of the organization as established by the board. • Ensures services meet the needs of the organization’s diverse constituents and aligns with DSCI’s mission. Community Representation and Advocacy • Acts as the principal spokesperson for the organization. • Establishes key positive partnerships within the immigrant community. • Engages in community education about immigration issues and immigrants’ legal rights. • Initiates and strengthens relationship and collaborations with organizations and leaders connected to DSCI’s mission and purpose. QUALIFICATIONS • Strong passion and commitment to the DSCI mission and immigrants’ rights. • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent non-profit experience. The ideal candidate will have prior public interest experience in immigration or related areas. • High level of organizational and advocacy experience, particularly in regards to issues affecting the immigrant community. • Demonstrated skills and experience in fundraising and proposal/grant writing. • Successful management background with experience in nonprofit financial development. • Ability to mange growth as it relates to strategic planning, organizational development, capacity-building and performance assessment. • Experience working with a board of directors or other governing body. • Team player with strong leadership skills and ability to build consensus. • Demonstrated ability to work with people of varying religious, cultural, educational, socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds. • Excellent written and oral communication, listening, and presentation skills. • Experience managing employees and volunteers. Recruit new staff when appropriate and evaluate staff performance. • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, databases and financial software. • Strong financial management experience. • Knowledge of issues affecting the immigrant communities of Iowa, Illinois and the surrounding areas. • Ability to work effectively with the public. • Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple projects at one time. • Knowledge of immigration laws and procedures (preferred). • Demonstrated success in marketing and publicity as it relates to expanding and improving the visibility of an organization (preferred). • Bilingual in English and Spanish, or another language (preferred). SALARY AND BENEFITS This position is Full Time. $40,000 annual salary with paid vacation and retirement contributions.
