Wesley United Methodist Church Director of Music

Wesley UMC

Wesley United Methodist Church in Muscatine, Iowa seeks a Director of Music. This is a permanent full-time professional music position.

The mission of Wesley United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We make disciples through our discipleship pathway and core values of Experiencing Grace, Exploring Truth, and Expressing Love. Our vision is to transform lives through hands-on ministry with children and families in need.

Wesley United Methodist Church has three services with a total average worship attendance of approximately 200. The 8:00 am Chapel Service is a small, somewhat informal, service with traditional music. The 9:00 am Celebration Service is a contemporary service led by our Celebration Band. The 11:00 am Sanctuary Service is a traditional service including our organ and choirs.

The Music Director will be primarily responsible for music planning and leadership for the two traditional services but will also be expected to provide general oversight for the Celebration Band as part of the overall music program.

Muscatine is located in southeastern Iowa along the Mississippi River, 30 miles southwest of Davenport. By Iowa standards, Muscatine is a medium-sized town with a population of about 23,000. There are many social and recreational opportunities in Muscatine itself and Quad Cities and Iowa City, nearby, offer many more.

Wesley’s Music Program

The music program at Wesley is rich and diverse including our Chancel Choir, a bell choir, and Muscatine Children’s and Youth Choirs; all accompanied by Gracie Pearl, our new Fisk Organ. The music program at Wesley is well endowed by the Jackson Trust.

The Chancel Choir is a volunteer adult choir that is supplemented by several student section leaders who receive a small scholarship stipend. Students from Muscatine High School, Muscatine Community College, The University of Iowa in Iowa City, and St Ambrose University and Augustana Colleges in the Quad Cities have, at times, filled these positions.

The Muscatine Children’s and Youth Choirs are open to the entire community, drawing singers from all over the area, as far as Wapello, Iowa City, and the Quad Cities.

Instrumental resources at Wesley are crowned by our pipe organ, CB Fisk, Op 153, III, 43-rank dedicated in 2019. The piano in the sanctuary is a Yamaha C7, choir room Steinway L, rehearsal room Yamaha G2, and in other places 3 Boston studio uprights and a Young Chang console. Bell sets are Malmark, 3-octave, and 5-octave. Tone chimes and Orff instruments are also available. Celebration band instruments include an acoustic/electric guitar, electric bass, electronic keyboard, and a trap set.

Wesley Church also sponsors the Jackson Concert Series, featuring artists of national and international repute. Past concerts have featured such artists as the Harlem String Quartet, Nathan Laube, organist, the Rose Ensemble, Chanticleer, and winners of the Cleveland Piano Competition.
