Thank you for supporting Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors during the past 20 years. We would like to invite you to come to celebrate with us at an open house on Oct 26th
, 2:00 - 4:00 at our office at 2024 Forest Ave, Suite 101 in Des Moines. Please come and learn about our history as well as the plans for the future. The guiding principle for Iowa JFON remains the same and is Matthew 25:34-40 “I was a stranger and you welcomed me… Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these… you did it unto me.”
We have accomplished much over the previous years because you believe in what we are doing. Iowa JFON started in 1999 having one clinic location with an attorney coming from the national office. Today we host seven clinic sites covering the entire state with three full-time attorneys and additional staff.
Looking towards the future we want to continue to offer free high-quality legal immigration services throughout the state of Iowa. Our attorneys are doing an amazing job in an ever-changing legal system. New requirements make it more difficult to get citizenship, which takes longer and more attorney time with more stringent rules.
Our attorneys want to serve as many clients as they can, which creates very large caseloads to manage. In 2018, 3161 clients were served, of which 1201 were new clients from 62 countries. Clients are turned away every month because we do not have the capacity to handle more cases.
As a board, the most difficult task is to maintain funding, which allows us to keep attorneys, and accredited staff to serve the clients in the most efficient way. Our funding comes from church and individual donations, apportionments from the Iowa United Methodist Church, grants and client contributions. A major financial grant which was awarded three years ago was renewed with only half of the funding this year and a decrease in apportionment funding will create a financial hardship, leading to the need to decrease staff. We need your help.
The following are examples of services your donation could provide:
$50 – Advice and Counsel
$100 – Work Authorization
$250 - Legal Permanent Resident
$500 – Family Unification
$1000 - Asylum
$2500 - Unaccompanied Minor
$5000 – Monthly Clinic
Board members and district representatives seek opportunities to speak at local churches or organizations. Maybe your church could host a fundraising event or make a mission contribution? Will you consider making a pledge or donation? You may contribute through the Iowa conference, or online at http://www.iowajfon.org/donate-now
or may be mailed to the Iowa JFON office. Each tax-deductible gift will give immigrants the opportunity to create a better life for themselves and their families.
Thank you for supporting Iowa JFON. We hope that you will join us on Oct 26th
and will share your story of JFON with others.
