MUMMs

I velcroed my cape, hopped in the van, and took off towards a super summer...

This was my 10th summer working with Mobile United Methodist Missionaries. Devoted to making disciples in mostly rural southern Iowa, this organization spends summers working alongside church volunteers in vacation Bible school ministry. This year, we used Cokesbury’s Hero Central curriculum to show kids (and grown-ups!) that when they live with God, they are superheroes. Places I traveled this summer included Randolph, Van Wert, Osceola, Farmington, Orient, Hebron, New Virginia, Council Bluffs, and a park in Oskaloosa. The other two MUMM travelers, Cherie Miner and Paige Jensen, have similar lists.

Highlights from this summer:

  • Giving a Bible to a girl who didn’t have one
  • Watching local volunteers take ownership- one brought her own cape!
  • Having a donkey and his human come share the message about the cross on his back
  • Bringing 50 kids who wouldn’t normally have a chance to get to church camp to Wesley Woods for a week of JOY Camp
  • Hearing kids echo our theme verse- “Do good! Seek peace! Go after it!”- Psalms 34:14b

Do you know MUMM’s mission?

Mobile United Methodist Missionaries (MUMM) is a ministry of the Iowa Conference serving the Southeast, Southwest and South Central Districts of the United Methodist Church, making disciples in rural Iowa.

MUMM does this by:

  • Leading VBS in community buildings, city halls, trailer parks and struggling rural UM churches.
  • Launching after-school programs in rural communities/churches.
  • Recruiting volunteers from local communities to help with programming.
  • Sending at-risk kids to JOY (Jesus, Others & You) Camp on scholarships.
  • Serving needs in communities year round and especially during the holiday season to share God’s love with all God’s people.
  • Connecting work projects with volunteer teams ready to help.

Help us serve others with a contribution

Give to Iowa Advance Special #311 at the Iowa Annual Conference.

Or, donate supplies. With three of us on the road this summer, we’ve depleted our stock of construction paper, glue sticks, washable and permanent markers. We could also use more kids’ scissors. Just let Cherie know you have supplies, and she’ll arrange to pick them up. It will give us a chance to share about our work and say “thank you”—because your apportionments, district askings and generous donations make it possible for us to do this work.

Connect with MUMM

If you’re interested in hosting a VBS, after-school or other youth program in your community, but need help getting started, contact Cherie at cminer5068@gmail.com or Allison at allison.marie.engel@gmail.com.

Additionally, contact Cherie if you’d like support for after-school and Sunday school programs, including for ideas and materials to help with the Conference’s Change a Child’s Story initiative. She’s also happy to share stories about MUMM’s work.
