Holy Week message from Bishop Laurie

God's Love Never Ends from Iowa Annual Conference on Vimeo.   Listen to the Bishop Laurie's message for Holy Week 2020 Grace to you and peace on this Palm Sunday. #AshesforAll—Ash Wednesday on the street

3/1/2017
On March 1, 2017, two Des Moines clergy were stationed at the corner of MLK Parkway and Cottage Grove offering ashes to celebrate Ash Wednesday to drivers stopped at the busy intersection. With great big smiles and a dish of ashes, Rev. Jennifer Hibben from thrive United Methodist Church and Rev. Alejandro Alfaro-Santiz from Trinity Las Americas United Methodist Church walked between cars during the morning commute.   “Ashes: We R More Alike Than Different. #Ashesforall” read the cardboard sign ...

Katie Dawson, Immanuel’s Lead Pastor and Associate Pastor Todd Treese were at a table marked with a purple stole.  A sign offered, simply, “ashes and prayers.”  Cards offered ...

The church was brought to the people on Ash Wednesday by four United Methodist clergy.  In their white albs they headed out through the Des Moines Skywalk system, at noon, to offer pray and the imposition of ashes.   “The Holy Spirit seems to be moving us here today,” Rev. Martha Ward observed, thinking about what some called “ashes to go.”  “It was similar to what John Wesley did when he got outside the church,” Rev. Bob Ward noted, adding “it feels right in our tradition.”   Click to listen to...
