Africa U launches a new Virtual AU Worship Service that celebrates our global mission story

October 27, 2020

To the clergy and laity of the Iowa Annual Conference,
Many of you know that our United Methodist Africa University plays a critical role in higher education not only in Zimbabwe but on the entire continent of Africa. Out of gratitude for the support that AU receives from around the UM connection, including Iowa, Africa University has produced a full worship service that they wish to share with us. Knowing that COVID-19 safety precautions have made worship planning a challenge, I hope that every local congregation will set aside a Sunday to worship with our AU friends. You will be blessed by the enthusiastic faith and deep passion of the students and faculty.

Bishop Laurie

The Iowa Conference has journeyed alongside Africa University in ministry with tremendous love and commitment. Given the steadfast engagement of Iowa United Methodists, we are excited to share with you a link to a new resource for local pastors, congregations and Africa University celebration partners. It’s a Virtual AU Worship Service which reimagines our annual local church “AU Sunday Saturation” events.
For members of the Africa University community, visiting with stakeholders and friends to share and celebrate the story of a ministry that they are shaping with their steadfast investment, is a privilege and delight. Learning continues. Faculty and students are generating new knowledge and homegrown solutions. Well-equipped, principled and deeply committed young graduates are returning to their communities with a ‘can do’ perspective. Faith, hope and dreams are alive on the Africa University campus and across the African continent. That’s the story of your Africa University and we hope that we have captured just a little bit of the vibrancy and impact of AU in the virtual worship service.
The Africa University Development Office, based in Nashville, is offering friends and partners across all five jurisdictions of The United Methodist Church in the United States the following:

  1. 40-minute, full length worship service featuring music, scripture, sermon, call to action and testimony from Africa University graduates and staff. You can view the full length service, labeled “0_40-minute AU Worship Service.mp4”, using this link: We are using the JumpShare platform which is less cumbersome but quite secure for easy access to the files.
  2. 1:06-minute promo video for the virtual worship service resource that is accessible via YouTube at
  3. Each element of the full length worship service is also available as a standalone item to allow local churches and groups maximum flexibility in personalizing their focus on Africa University through use of these digital resources. There are fourteen individual elements in the folder and each is one is downloadable. The elements include: Gathering Photo MontageGreeting/WelcomeTestimony and Call to Worship by AU Graduate Julian Kanombirira , Opening PrayerScripturesSong of Preparation - AU ChoirSermon/Message by Rev. Yollande YamboCall to Action by Mr. James H. SalleySong of Celebration of Grace – AU ChoirClosing PrayerBenediction – The Blessing by AU Graduate Julian Kanombirira.

Our hope is that these digital resources—either the full length worship service or some of the elements of the service—will prove to be a great fit for the mission celebration needs of congregations in the Iowa Conference well into 2021. The different elements of the worship service feature subtitles on the presentations and songs. Persons who wish to use the full service or an element from the service can download the files they need using the link provided: We look forward to your feedback on any aspect of the resources, towards strengthening our outreach in this unprecedented season.
Thank you in advance for helping to share word of the virtual AU worship resources within the Iowa Conference and beyond. Thank you for your ongoing advocacy on behalf of Africa University’s ministry. Together, we are equipping new leaders and “making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world” even in the midst of a global health crisis.
Despite a myriad of daily challenges, we proclaim that blessings abound,
