The Black Hawk County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (BHC NAACP) will be having a march in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on Saturday, August 24, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
??The march will start at Lincoln Park and travel down E. 4th Street to Jubilee United Methodist Church. The marchers will be accompanied by the Union Baptist Crusaders Drill Team and the newly formed motorcycle club called "Them Dogs." At the church, the Rev. Dr. Michael D. Blackwell, president of the BHC NAACP, will pay tribute to Medgar Evers, the first field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi; Evers was killed on June 12, 1963. Subsequently, the Rev. Abraham Funchess, chair of the religious affairs committee of the BHC NAACP, will reflect upon the 1963 March on Washington and relate it to today.??The march/celebration will join the North End Arts and Music Festival, which is taking place on the grassland beside Jubilee Church.??
