2014 State Fair achievements and participation

Iowa United Methodists are present at the 2014 State Fair.  We've heard from a few who will be tbe participating in events and/or be honored.  If you, or your group, will be receiving an award or participating in some way, please let us know ([email protected]) and we'll update our list...

Christian Chaos, the worship band from 1st UMC of Tipton, IA, will be performing from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon, August 15 on the Susan Knapp Amphitheater.

On Wednesday August 13th at 1:00pm, you are invited to hear the musical delight of Nora DeRues as she accompanies her quartet, Shepherd's Staff on the Susan Knapp Stage. Nora is the organist at Prairie City UMC.

Shari Miller was awarded honorable mention for “Panorama,” a photograph on display in the 4-H photo salon.

Hannah Curtis, 11 from Jefferson, has her project "Dressing Nigerian Girls" exhibited in the 4-H building at the Iowa State Fair.  Hannah organized an effort to sew 464 dresses to be sent to Nigeria through Beverly Nolte with the Iowa Nigerian Partnership.  Her project earned State Fair exhibit rites at the Greene County Fair and earned a Blue Ribbon award at the Iowa State Fair.  Hannah and her family attend First United Methodist Church in Jefferson.

Benjamin Saunders, of Corydon UMC, has two blue ribbon photographs in the 4-H photo salon.

Beula Lee, a 13 year-old member of St. Luke’s UMC, will showcase her pillowcase dresses at the State Fair in the 4-H building, compleing her goal of making 500 Dresses for Girls in Africa in one year

Sandy Ruckhaber, member of Forest Mills UMC, is being inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame

West Des Moines UMC will be celebrating their 65th anniversary at the Fair this year. The WDM/UMC food booth is at the southeast corner of the sheep barn.

Cole Heiple, 15 from Dunkerton, had his Applie Pie Filling and a walnut/ash with granite top table exhibited in the 4-H building at the Iowa State Fair. His projects won State Fair exhibit rights at the Black Hawk County Fair. Cole and his family attend First United Methodist Church in Dunkerton.

Jan Winslow, a life long member of the Corydon UMC, will be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame.

Dawn Johnsoon, daughter of Keith & Evelyn Scott had 3 pictures accepted for exhibit at the State Fair.  1, a picture of the Federal Prison in Philadelphia, was a first place winner.  Dawn is a member of the Indianola First UMC.

Chad Wood of Prairie City UMC won First Place in the Turkey Calling Contest at this year's fair. His daughter, Paige, won Third place!

Benjamin Moffitt, from Farmer's Chapel UMC in Indianola, was awarded Champion Shorthorn Steer in the 4-H market show on Wednesday, August 13th at the Iowa State Fair.  He raised the steer with his dad and grandfathers on their rural Warren County Farm.
