Advent Devotion December 5

December 05, 2018

"As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here."  — Luke 11:29-32

We all seem to seek or ask for signs from time to time, using this to give us greater certainty in what we believe. I think these signs, miracles or other events are important to today’s generation as they were back then. Jesus insists to us that in their time, Jonah was one of the signs from God. He repeats himself saying “something greater is here.” I believe that Jesus was hinting at the fact that he was in fact that something greater. Jesus would die for us and for our sins and be resurrected. This will be the greatest sign of all that God is among us.

Prayer: I find myself looking for signs frequently that suit me and my life. I find myself trying to form coincidences as signs from God. Lord help me to focus on the biggest sign of all which is God’s love that he gives us each day. Jesus sacrificing his life for ours, my beautiful family to which I can spread and share his love and story with, a mind and body to which I can use to be a good Christian and spread his word and more. What signs in your life are leading you to Jesus?
