Advocacy Team announces 2020 day at the Iowa Capitol and updated priorities

December 17, 2019

Inspired by the words of Mary's Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), the Advocacy Team met to plan the 2020 Advocacy Day, which will be held on January 30, 2020.

“It’s the annual opportunity for Iowa United Methodists to lobby the statehouse with a voice of faith caring for the poor and oppressed,” said team member Reverend Josh Steward.

Advocacy Day provides an opportunity to anyone wishing to help make a difference by having time set aside to meet with legislators and hear from Bishop Laurie Haller.

The Iowa United Methodist Women (UMW) is leading the effort to prioritize and plan this year’s Advocacy Day alongside the team. Part of the meeting was to select legislative priorities and begin the creation of a brochure to help United Methodists in Iowa speak with lawmakers about issues that are important to them.

The priorities relating to the 2020 legislative session are criminal justice, mental health, gun safety, the environment, poverty and human rights.
