Algona First United Methodist Church packages of 61,000 meals in one day

April 01, 2022

The Mission Committee at Algona First United Methodist Church planned, coordinated, and hosted a Food Packaging event that took place on November 14, 2021.

Approximately 200 volunteers came together to help package meals during two shifts. To offset the cost of the food needed to hold the event, Algona First held fundraisers, including cupcake sales from Scratch cupcakery, peach sales from a produce company in Colorado called Palisade Produce, and sales from a pork supper.

They feel blessed as a church to have volunteers come from other churches and towns to help them reach their food packaging goal. They also had assistance from residents and a local business in getting the food supplies from the "Outreach Program" truck into the church and from the church to where the packaged meals needed to go to be delivered to their destination. The "Outreach Program" is the organization they went through to do this food packaging event.

On November 14, they packaged 47,952 rice and bean meals sent to Haiti through Go Serv Global! They also packaged 5,184 mac and cheese meals that were sent back with "Outreach" to be donated to those in need in Iowa, and 8,208 rice and bean meals were also sent with "Outreach" to be donated to their Children’s Centers in Tanzania. The total meals packaged during the event were 61,344! It was a huge success!

They could not have done this without all the volunteers! It truly is a blessing to bless others!
