Minburn UMC Engages in their Community through their “Buy Nothing

April 12, 2023

Every year, the In Mission Together team collects stories of how Iowa United Methodist Churches are in mission with their communities. These stories will uplift, inspire, and communicate to other churches how they can be in mission.

Minburn United Methodist Church writes that they collected clothing and household items for their “Buy Nothing Event,” where everything was free. People came to the church and could take as many things as needed. They ended up serving over 100 people, which for their small town is incredible! They donated the remaining items to New Hope Village in Perry. They are holding the event again this Spring on April 29th during the city-wide garage sale.

Minburn UMC also has “Mission in Motion” Work Days, where they clean up weeds, brush, and trees (including cutting one down) for Minburn residents. The residents appreciate their help, and the church receives positive comments from the community! They have plans to have another Work Day this Spring.

The Girls Club (all-girls youth group) also served in many ways last year. In January, they sorted clothing, stocked groceries, and assisted clients with groceries at Bidwell Riverside Food Pantry. In March, they sorted clothing at the Encore Thrift Store. In June, they went to RiseFest in Sheldon, Iowa, and volunteered in the face painting tent and the VIP tent serving VIPs snacks and drinks. In July, they stayed at Riverside Bible Camp for their mission trip, cleaned up several flower gardens, and did some landscaping.

In Mission Together encourages United Methodist Churches to prayerfully support the United Methodist mission on local, conference, national, and international levels through giving and sharing in a relationship, to fulfill Matthew 25 (“Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.”) and Matthew 28 (“Go into all the world and make disciples.”)

In Mission Together involves building relationships in shared ministries with people, programs, and projects. Partnering may last a few days or continue for many years. In Mission Together celebrates Supporting, Serving, and Sharing Stories from our Iowa United Methodist Churches in mission.

We want to hear your In Mission Together stories — about what you do and how you do it! Learning about groups/churches “doing” mission may give ideas to implement in other local churches and communities.

Submit written stories along with a photo(s) you may have or video clips with the purpose of the articles to be published by Conference Communications and shared with Iowa United Methodists.
