More than $345,000 raised for Iowa United Methodist Camp and Retreat Centers

May 16, 2022

More than 100 volunteers and staff worked together on the phones this spring to raise over $345,000 for Iowa United Methodist Camp and Retreat Centers. This is the third year that the ministry has held a successful capital campaign.

“We're grateful for all the campaigners who made phone calls and in-person visits,” said Camp Registrar Shannon Bardole-Foley. “We’re extremely grateful to all the folks who made a gift and care so much about camps and getting kids to camp. We're just very grateful that each year this continues to be a success.”

A $50,000 grant from Iowa United Women in Faith (UWF) set the ministry over its goal in April.

“The grants are made possible by major funds from the estate of Barbara Csomay (SO-may) that were designated to Iowa Conference United Methodist Women (now United Women in Faith),” said Gladys Alvarez, Iowa UWF President. Csomay, a longtime UMW member from Kanawha and a retired music teacher and band director, died in 2015.

One of the campaigners shared about her granddaughter’s experience last summer, saying, “The pandemic was very hard on her and she became very withdrawn. Camp changed that completely. She came home happy and talkative. She joined the youth group at her church. We are all grateful for her camp experience."

Iowa United Methodist Camp and Retreat Centers have a goal to eventually be using zero apportionment dollars. According to Bardole-Foley, this year’s apportionment request will be around $398,000 – about half of what it was six years ago.

Gifts that are designated to sites directly go Campership funds or to Okoboji or Wesley Woods United Methodist Camp and Retreat Centers. Bardole-Foley said that 100 percent of Campership funding has come out of the campaign funds this year.

“It's so great that people care so much about the kids that attend our camps, whether they attend one of our churches or not, and just to see the support there,” she said.
