One of six churchwide Special Sundays with offerings of The United Methodist Church, Native American Ministries Sunday serves to remind United Methodists of the gifts and contributions made by Native Americans to our society. The special offering supports Native American outreach within annual conferences and across the United States and provides seminary scholarships for Native Americans.
When you give generously on Native American Ministries Sunday, you equip seminary students who will honor and celebrate Native American culture in their ministries.
Support the Native American Child Care Center in Iowa
One-half of the Native American Ministries Offering received the second Sunday after Easter (or whenever convenient for your church) is sent to the General Church for distribution and the other half remains in Iowa
. It is given to the only Iowa Native American mission that meets the specifics for the offering, the Native American Child Care Center (Advance Special #219) which is hosted by Grace United Methodist Church
in Sioux City Iowa.
The Native American Child Care Center began over 40 years ago as a cooperative effort between leaders of the Native American community and local United Methodists. Most of that time it has been at its current location, Grace United Methodist Church. The center is licensed by the state of Iowa and is a United Way agency.
The philosophy and purpose of the center is to provide child-care services and an early childhood education and development program primarily for, but not limited to, pre-school children who identify with the Native American heritage. It also promotes and fosters the physical, emotional, social, cultural and intellectual development of children to help them realize their full potential.
The curriculum includes school readiness, self-image development, social interaction, health and nutrition, motor development, cultural awareness and parental involvement. The center strives to remove many of the barriers to service that the families face—transportation, high cost of childcare and cultural differences.
