Authorities are still trying to sort out the why of the shooting in San Bernardino. We know that 14 people were killed, 17 wounded, and countless others terrorized and the heart of Jesus is once again broken. In the Advent season we, in the United Methodist Church, join other Christians in celebrating the coming of the “Light of the World,” Emmanuel, God with us. What we do know is that Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik acted with hatred and malice in their hearts.
In the darkness of grief and fear, it is important to remember these words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
We join in lifting the victims and their families in prayer as we lift up the way of Jesus for a broken world.
