The gifts of God

The gifts of God

Scripture:

and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
    for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
    holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
    from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.” — Luke 1:47-55

Mary praises God, who has shown preference for the lowly, by selecting her to bear the Holy Infant. Mary had no special gifts, no special training, no special lineage. It is Joseph who is from the family of King David. And yet, God chose Mary for this special purpose and this tremendous trial. They say God doesn't choose the equipped, God equips the chosen.

Do you trust God to equip you for whatever task God chooses to give you?  Sometimes we just need to say, "Yes, Lord."  God is all-knowing and all-powerful.  God can make amazing things happen through us, even when we don't believe it is possible.

Prayer: All-knowing, all-powerful God, you alone know what I am capable of. I don't believe in myself even as much as you do. Help me to be obedient, as Mary was obedient, and see in myself what you see. Amen.
